The Mount of Temptation is located about 3 km northwest of Jericho, about 58 km east of Jerusalem, Israel. The mountain is located in the Judean Desert and overlooks the Jordan Valley
The Mount of Temptation is mentioned in the Gospel of Mark (1: 12-13); Luke (4: 1-13) and Matthew. In the Gospel of Matthew (4: 1-4) we learn of the encounter of Jesus with Satan on the mountain. Satan twice tried Jesus on the mountain as soon as he tried to make the hungry Jesus turn stones into bread. Jesus refused and was fed by angels instead. The place of this temptation is said to be in a grotto in the monastery of temptation. Again, Jesus was tempted on the top of the mountain, where Satan looked out over the land and said to Jesus:”All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.” Jesus was not tempted and replied:”Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God and him alone shalt thou serve.”
